This is a letter of recommendation for Jenny Raymond, who was my teacher for three day-long workshops at the Western New York Quilt Conference in June, 2002. The three classes were "Tis the Season Jacket," "Patchy Patch Garden Jacket," and "Just My Look Vest." Jenny was an excellent teacher. She was thoroughly prepared. Her needs list was complete, and she gave us her e-mail address if we had questions before the conference. I did have and question about fabrics and got a prompt reply.
Jenny came with samples of all the specific techniques she demonstrated. Many of the techniques were unusual and she showed us exactly how to do them. She had several suitcases full of garments to show us, and explained in detail how the different effects were achieved. I am not a garment maker, which is why I signed up for three days of similar classes. Everything was explained so well that I felt I could succeed in making any of the jackets or vests. I have completed the jacket from the first class and will finish the second one this winter.
Special mention needs to be made of the handouts for the classes. They are incredibly detailed and complete. They are done on a color printer so that we have a permanent record of all her garments and her tips. I have over 90 pages from the three classes. This is like having a textbook for the future.
In addition, Jenny pin-fitted a vest pattern for each person in the class so that we will have an accurate fit when we construct the garment. This was something she did not need to do, but was so helpful to us. As we worked with our fabrics on a design wall in the jacket classes, Jenny was involved in helping us with color and design. She has definite ideas but is supportive and has a positive attitude.
As a member of the Amherst Museum Quilters Guild in Amherst, New York, I have been attending our annual seminars for over ten years. This fall tradition has allowed me to take classes from many of the best known quilt teachers in the country. Including Harriet Hargrave, Carol Doak, Libby Lehman, and many others. I feel Jenny covered more material and made better use of the time than many teachers we have had.
I will be recommending Jenny's classes whenever I have the chance.
Yours truly,
Katherine Hill
